Unemployment Figures Steady Locally

January 20, 2017

End-of-year job data shows little change from November to December 2016. The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Gulf Coast region (Bay, Franklin, and Gulf counties) was 5.2 percent in December 2016, just 0.1 percentage point higher than the region's year ago rate of 5.1 percent.
Out of a labor force of 96,085 there were 4,956 unemployed residents in the region. Job growth in the Panama City MSA outpaced the state in the industries of leisure/hospitality, and government.

Unemployment Rates (%) (not seasonally adjusted)

  Dec-16Nov-16 Dec-15
 Bay County 5.25.1 5.2
 Franklin County 4.34.2 4.3
 Gulf County 4.54.4 4.8

“Historically between December and January our unemployment rate rises, and there are less employment opportunities before the tourism season begins to ramp up,” said Kim Bodine, Executive Director of CareerSource Gulf Coast. “These are seasonal trends. In February, we should start to see the unemployment rate lower, as we expect to see hiring in leisure and hospitality and retail as employers prepare for our tourism season.”
Industries gaining in jobs over the year were: leisure and hospitality (+600 jobs); government (+500 jobs); education and health services (+300 jobs); professional and business services (+200 jobs); and financial activities (+100 jobs). The trade, transportation, and utilities (?800 jobs); manufacturing (?200 jobs); and information (?100 jobs) industries lost jobs over the year. The mining, logging, and construction and other services industries were unchanged over the year.
